The Whitney Museum of American Art
Located on New York City's Upper East Side, the Whitney is home to some of the most well known modern and contemporary American artworks. This museum is devoted to American artists and places special importance on living artists. Notable artists like Cindy Sherman and Jasper Johns had their first retrospectives at the Whitney.
The Whitney was established in 1931 by American artist, art collector and philanthropist Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney.
In the early part of the 20th century, American artists found it hard to get their work into museums. Taking note of this issue, Whitney and her family opened the Whitney Studio in 1914 and by 1963 the Whitney Museum of American Art had outgrown two other spaces, finally acquiring its present site on Madison Avenue and 75th street.
