What is Contemporary Art?
Contemporary art is hard to define because the movement encompasses art that is being created at this very moment. In other words, art that is created today is considered to be "contemporary." The contemporary period began in the late 1960s and is still evolving today. This movement began with iconic artists like Andy Warhol and continues to evolve today.
The New Museum is one of the leading museums in contemporary art. It is known for its surveys of up and coming contemporary artists. The Whitney is a museum dedicated primarily to modern and contemporary American art. Both of these museums have collections of contemporary art that define this evolving movement.
